Yunduo’er readily consents to set free the fishes from a bottle – one she captured herself and the rest given to her by other kids yesterday - into the brook meandering past our hostel in Liuba’s morning glow. This is not the first time Yunduo’er has set loose lives taken from the wild. We’ve never encouraged Yunduo’er to catch living beings in the wilderness. The sight of adults teaching their children how to net fishes does stoke Yunduo’er’s impulses, but we can’t talk her into stopping there and then, however she’ll be swayed in time. Etched in Yunduo’er’s innermost being is the notion that we can’t afford to wrest creatures from their homes in the wild; all lives have souls and bear grievances when torn away from their kin. Should they perish, their spirits might set the wheel of fortune spinning against those whom they deem as perpetrators - the transgressors’ day of reckoning and retribution is lying in wait.

晨光漫过留坝，溪水蜿蜒，淌过民宿门前。瓶中小鱼，昨日云朵儿亲手捕得一条，余下皆是别的孩子所送。此时云朵儿把小鱼尽数放回溪涧。这已非云朵儿首次放归山野生灵。我们从未鼓励云朵儿捕捉野物，但见有家长教孩子抓鱼，这确实撩拨起云朵儿的兴致。我们虽难当场劝止云朵儿，但过后道理终能为云朵儿听纳。山野生灵，不可强夺其居。万物有灵，一旦骨肉离散，便会郁结怨怼；若不幸殒命，其魂魄便会拨动命运之轮旋转降罚于违逆天道之人，静候向加害者追讨前愆之时，所以终有精魂清算日，自有天道裁决辰。这一理念已深植云朵心底。

Before us is that long flight of 2400 wooden steps that climbs Mount Zibaishan. Yunduo’er is still brimming with zap, intending to press on, when she and mummy hike up to the 1200-step mark where mummy, zonked out, decides to call it quits and then they come down together. In fact, huffing and puffing, I’ve already thrown in the towel way before mummy does, with only roughly 100 steps behind me down there. After the taxing footslogging uphill we swing by the former residence of Zhangliang, the Marquis of Liu, one of the strategists and tacticians behind Liubang who founded Han dynasty that lasted over 4 centuries following the evanescent splendor of the First Emperor Yingzheng’s Qin.

眼前紫柏山2400级木阶层叠萦回向上。到1200个台阶时云朵儿仍兴意正酣，还想继续向上；可妈妈已受不住，于是二人便一同下山。其实我到100来个台阶时就已气息艰涩、早就无力再进而放弃。历山道劳顿后顺道张良故宅。始皇帝嬴政一世煌煌盛景，过早雄图倾颓，而张良正是辅佐刘邦奠立绵延四百余载汉家国祚基业的谋臣之一。

The leafy, sunlight-dappled Taibai Road, billed as the Most Beautiful Country Road, leads us through quite a number of villages and then onto Highway G30 Lianhuo that sends us whizzing northwards. After nightfall we make it back from the blissful cool of Qinling to the searing heat of the city of Xi’an where, before returning the campervan V90, I top up its fuel tank and mummy purges its interior of dust and grime, restoring the vehicle to pristine condition –we are indebted to gufu-gugu for having lent us the vehicle, and family ties do not exempt us from observing codes of courtesy and propriety.

枝叶蓊郁、光影婆娑的太白路，号称最美乡村公路。沿途厉遍大小村落，后上G30连霍高速向北。夜幕垂落，复归暑气蒸腾的西安，已不见秦岭的沁凉天地。还车之前，我将油箱加满，妈妈清洁车内如新。云朵儿姑父姑姑借房车给我们已是情挚，但即便是家人，我们自己多少也得懂点儿事儿，加满油和清洁是必须。
