陕西西安：

Nothing beats staying cooped up indoors mellowing out in the cool of gugu and gufu’s place, shut away from the simmering sun that’s now hellishly scorching the venerable city of Xi’an where tales of the checkered past of the 13 dynasties are still being told. I continue schooling Yunduo’er and jiejie Panpan in New Concept English. In the end they pull off a convincing rendering of the dialogue in Lesson 5 where two perfect strangers whose paths first cross strike up an easy ; conversation, sipping and nibbling. From my perspective, there’s no inkling they’re doing a recitation assignment.

骄阳蒸腾，此时正炙烤着十三朝兴废相循、荣枯交替的往事代代流传的古都西安。那热，实在受不了。万般皆下品，唯有锁户高。躲于姑父姑姑家借室内空调清凉调憩最为稳妥。继续训练云朵儿、盼盼姐姐《新概念英语》。两个小朋友把第5课对白演绎得如此真切传神，若萍踪过客邂逅闲话漫谈，浅呷轻抿，随性小食。旁观全然看不出这俩有任何在背课文的迹象。

In the evening gufu and gugu regale us with a sumptuous dinner at a posh restaurant. Yunduo’er clearly knows a thing or two about table manners, standing up to clink glasses with gufu and gugu in particular, with pleasant niceties, looking delightfully unaffected. Mummy says she observes Yunduo’er always winds up as a spontaneous leader when hanging around with her usual young crowd. Obviously Yunduo’er outshines me in that respect, a far cry from me. I tend to baulk at, feel ill at ease and feel like gagging at large gatherings where everyone toasts everyone else – some overtures are for show, maybe simply for a chance to proclaim that he does self-introspections three times a day. But only with those I can relate to will I be in my element. Hopefully Yunduo’er won’t be a chip off the old block,

晚上姑父姑姑一席佳肴请客，馆舍雅致。云朵儿懂几分餐桌礼数，起身敬姑父姑姑，言辞得体，神态自然。妈妈早就说过据她观察云朵儿伴众小友嬉戏，动辄成组织者，常居一众小友之首，大伙都听她的。显然云朵儿这方面胜我多筹。我与云朵儿，性情分野，判若两类。逢此众人轮番举杯场合，我都浑身难受，膈应。诸多殷勤客套，内里必交杂表演戏份，还可借机当众宣布其“一日三省吾身”。而唯有与心意相通或熟稔之人吃喝，我方才舒展自在。但望云朵儿日后切莫如我。
