Night slowly recedes. Qinling’s mountains awaken from their peaceful slumber, exhaling crisp coolness amidst the dawn chorus of birds and insects. The previous night yields only 18°C. In daytime and nighttime, Qinling is truly a world away from the sweltering city of Xi’an. We have perambulated through the province of Shaanxi many times over the years, but this is our first serious foray into the recesses of the range revered as the Father Mountain of the Chinese nation. The 1600km Qinling swells and falls, surging eastwards from Gansu’s highlands, slicing through southern Shaanxi and spilling out into the fractured hilly country of western Henan. Dominating this colossal elevated chain is Mount Taibai whose serrated crest juts out into the sky at 3771m as the loftiest terrestrial summit east of the Qinghai‑Tibet Plateau. This titanic geologic bulwark looks over China’s terrain as the primeval natural divide defining northern and southern China while marking the fluvial boundary between the Yellow River and Yangtze River systems.

夜轻缓退去。秦岭自酣眠中苏醒，鸟啭虫鸣交作，山间漾开清润凉意。昨夜气温仅18°C。朝暮之间，秦岭与溽热西安恍若两个天地。多年来过陕西多次，但深入这被尊为“华夏父亲山”的腹地还是首回。秦岭重峦逶迤1600公里，自甘肃高地浩荡东驰，横切陕南，余脉漫溢，入豫西就剩点儿零碎儿，化为低矮丘陵。这宏大造山带之上，太白山峭峰凌云，海拔3771米，是青藏高原以东陆地最高峰。秦岭为中华南北的天然界划，亦是黄河与长江两大水系的分水岭。

Eye-pleasing, ingeniously conceived installations abound at the Lovers’ Valley. Yunduo’er treads on the suspension bridge - through stately conifers - whose rust-hued chains are adorned with crimson prayer ribbons and which vanishes into the dense foliage.

情人谷内，匠心巧筑散落林壑。云朵儿行于悬索桥上，锈蚀色铁链挂满祈福红带，桥身穿过苍劲松林，消隐于蓊郁深处。

We move into another homestay hostel. On the way to Shizigou the campervan V90 jolts to a grinding halt in front of a height restriction beam. We retrace our steps and unlock two scooters after scanning the codes. It’s our first time to steer scooters, and the ride is heaps of fun for Yunduo’er as a passenger, with wind streaming over her cheeks as we roll along. At Shizigou, Yunduo’er holds up a mass of billowy white clouds overhead with both hands and takes in a crystalline emerald lake lying in the embrace of a valley. Not far away is a sun-kissed pasture woven into the fabric of Qinling, where Yunduo’er mingles with a flock of sheep, jumping at the chance to dote upon those docile animals.

换了一间民宿。去往狮子沟途中，房车突遇限高架，车轮吱吱，车身遽止。只得折返，扫码俩电驴。这是我们首次体验电驴，一路追风而行，风漫过感觉新鲜的云朵儿脸颊。至狮子沟，云朵儿双手托捧一大块蓬松云絮，饱览山谷怀拥之中那汪澄澈碧翠湖水。不远一片融于秦岭肌理、沐于暖阳的草场上，云朵儿置身羊群，与一众驯良生灵默然相契。
