Xi’an – Liuba, Shaanxi:
The morning sees us pulling out of the city of Xi’an and heading southwestwards aboard the campervan gufu-gugu have lent to us, giving us the chance to savor what a campervan travel is all about for the first time. In fact, after treating us to a fine dinner last night, gufu gave me a lowdown on which-is-which on the dashboard and assorted features like the air-conditioning, microwave, sink, toilet and sleeping berth, and I even took a short spin in the neighborhood, cutting my teeth on steering a campervan. This Maxus V90, produced by Shanghai-based SAIC MAXUS, felt quite user-friendly to a driver with 30 years behind the wheel like me. Gufu is such a car aficionado that the family owns three vehicles including this campervan, a Porche and a NIO ES8. With both the V90 and that NIO ES8 – marketed as NIO EL 8 in Europe - which gufu-gugu recently acquired to replace that Sorento and drove us to dinner last night and which impressed with its commodious cabin and premium finish, I find it hard to wrap my head round the blistering pace at which China’s auto sector has made it big, which kind of boggles my mind.
Roughly 300km later we get to Liuba, Hanzhong holed up in Qinling’s verdant rolling mountains. Like so many other homestay hostels we’ve experienced around the country, well-appointed Wayaoju we settle into oozes warm, detail-to-attention charms –property owners have a keen grasp of creature comforts crafted from best materials. Yunduo’er is captivated by a small dragonfly on the bedding – insects easily sneak indoors in mountains, and that’s par for the course.
Time to get out for a leisurely stroll around. Yunduo’er fancies the two earrings which mummy makes with the seeds of a plant species. At Laojie, a stone slab-paved lane stretches through shop fronts decked out with scarlet lanterns, a hallmark of Chinese traditions. Yunduo’er picks two trinkets, one for herself and the other for jiejie Panpan. As dusk is creeping in, we join the townsfolk watching outdoor shows on a plaza.
