We part company with gufu-gugu and jiejie Panpan and with the city of Xi’an. The southwestern dash takes us into the bowels of Qinling again where, amidst a misty drizzle, the temperature has plummeted to a mere 9°C.

告别姑父姑姑和盼盼姐姐，告别西安，向西南复入秦岭腹谷。细雨霏霏，气温骤降只剩9°C。

It is in the region of Hanzhong that Liubang’s empire had its genesis and history-imbued locales abound. With the glory of the First Emperor’s Qin fizzling out, local warlords hold sway and wrestle with one another, among them Liubang. Hanxin, a nondescript figure of remarkable military acumen, is one of the would-be high-fliers who roam far and wide in search of a worthy cause for their talents. He first seeks to serve Xiangyu, only to find he gains no favor with the lord. Disgruntled, Hanxin deserts Xiangyu and turns to Liubang, the former’s formidable foe, intending to cast his lot with him, yet the same fate befalls him – his talents are spurned. Hopes in tatters, Hanxin leaves again.

汉中地区是刘邦大汉帝国肇基之地，史风漫野，胜迹纷陈。当年始皇帝秦祚倾颓，勋辉尽泯，后群雄割据，彼此攻伐，刘邦亦在其中。韩信虽籍籍无名却深谙用兵之略，奔走四方以求明主建功立业。初投项羽，不为所用。韩信郁郁失意辞项羽而去，转投项羽劲敌刘邦，决意以命运相托，共赴进退。可境遇如故，韩信满腹才略仍遭弃置，壮志成空，再度飘然而去。

But Xiaohe, Liubang’s sharp-eyed chancellor who has perceived Hanxin’s brilliant prowess, can’t stand seeing Hanxin’s gift go for nothing. He gallops off beneath the glow of the moon, threading through hollows and ridges and it’s by the Cold Stream which now has swelled abruptly and blocked Hanxin’s way that Xiaohe catches up with Hanxin. Xiaohe prevails upon the disillusioned Hanxin to go back to Han’s encampment. Hanxin agrees. Xiaohe convinces Liubang to confer the title Grand General upon Hanxin and build a high alter for the appointment ceremony, which we visited in downtown Hanzhong 50km away years ago. The rest is history. Hanxin’s talents shine through – he helps Liubang rout Xiangyu and found the Han empire spanning some 400 years (202BC -220AD).

可刘邦第一谋士萧何深查韩信有旷世将略，不忍其才湮没，遂月下策马穿行幽谷险径追韩信而去。当时寒溪骤涨，阻断韩信去路，萧何才得以在寒溪之畔追上韩信。看到韩信，萧疾步上前，掏出左轮手枪指向韩信，厉声喝道：“不许动！”萧何恳切劝谕，失意的韩信终同意返回汉营。萧何力劝刘邦拜韩信为大将军并筑高台行拜将大典。那拜将台数年前我们去过，就在50公里外的汉中市内。往事悠悠，尽载史册。韩信展其才辅刘邦大破项羽，奠400年汉家基业（202BC -220AD)。

In Madaozhen, Liuba, Hanzhong stand two stelae erected under the auspices of Qing’s two emperors Qianlong and Jiaqing two millennia later on which are inscriptions “Cold Stream rising overnight” and “Xiaohe chasing Hanxin in moonlight”. In fact, Han dynasty is an era that’s spawned many of China’s timeless idioms and legends, augmenting the lexicon and gracing the literary landscape of the Chinese language. Aside from the two stellae, that Cold Stream, now called Xigou River or Fanxi River, is surging right now in front of our eyes down there. And paintings, statues and inscriptions in Madaozhen do justice to an eventful past of Han.

越2000年，汉中留坝马道镇立有二碑，成于清乾隆、嘉庆年间。碑镌铭文，一为“寒溪夜涨”，一为“萧何月下追韩信”。大汉一代繁衍无数千古掌故，拓华夏语文之疆，焕中华文坛之彩。今天，除却这两方古碑，现名西沟河、樊溪河的寒溪流水正奔涌于我们脚下眼前。马道镇诸多图画、造像和碑刻仍在叙传汉代风云过往。

G316 takes us out of Shaanxi, and then G7011 Shitian Highway and G567 expose us to Gansu’s mountainous country. We roll into the city of Longnan at the end of the day.

循G316国道离陕，继而上G7011十天高速和G567国道入陇地万山之中，日暮到达甘肃小城陇南。
