English
If you're heading to Xishuangbanna, there's one place you absolutely can't miss: Menglun Tropical Botanical Garden. When people talk about Xishuangbanna being a "green gem," they're really referring to this botanical garden as the jewel in the crown. It's no exaggeration—this place is the real deal.
The official name is Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences**, and it's a national 5A scenic area. The garden sits in Menglun Township, Mengla County, and gets wrapped around on three sides by the Luosuo River, a tributary of the LANCANG. The geography actually looks like a gourd, which is why locals call it "Gourd Island." There are gates on the east and west sides, with the east gate being the main entrance. The west gate connects to town via suspension bridge, while a road bridge on the south leads into Mengla.
History and Scale
English
The garden was founded back in 1959 by Cai Xitao, a prominent Chinese botanist, as the research base for the Yunnan Institute of Tropical Botany. Today, it's the biggest tropical botanical garden in China, with the most diverse and complete collection of plant species you'll find anywhere. It's basically a one-stop shop for scientific research, plant conservation, and public education.
The 1,000-hectare garden is split into two main sections: the west side (where tourists hang out) and the east side (mainly for research and rainforest preservation). There are 35 themed gardens scattered throughout—everything from bamboo to orchids to fruit gardens—plus spots dedicated to rare and endangered species.
Facilities and Plant Collections
English
You'll also find research facilities, a plant specimen museum, a germplasm center, and even a watchtower for studying the rainforest ecosystem. In total, there are over 4,000 species of tropical plants here. Some of the highlights include:
- The "miracle fruit" that makes sour things taste sweet
- Trees with medicinal properties (like the mayten tree, which fights cancer)
- The upas tree—the most poisonous tree around. Seriously, one arrow dipped in its poison could kill you instantly
- The "plant hangman"—basically a plant that strangles its hosts to death
- The king lotus, which is huge enough to hold a 20-kilogram kid
- Black rosewood worth $3,000 a ton
- An ancient cycas tree that's over 1,000 years old
The Dracaena Garden
English
There are around 150 dracaena species in the world, mostly in Africa and Asia. The garden here, opened in 2002, has about 60 species spread over one hectare. Dracaena can live up to 5,000 years, earning the nickname "longevity pine." What's really cool is the red resin that oozes from the branches—called "dragon's blood." In traditional Chinese medicine, it's prized for healing wounds and improving blood circulation.
The National Tree & Flower Garden
English
Built for the 1999 World Horticultural Exposition, this 1.3-hectare garden brings together 55 national trees and flowers from 66 countries across six continents. You'll see stuff like Laos's plumeria rubra and Belgium's azalea. With decorative plants thrown in, the collection hits about 165 species total.
The Famous People & Trees Garden
English
Over the years, tons of important figures have visited and planted trees here. There's a striking statue at the entrance called "A Tour in the Forest" that celebrates Professor Cai Xitao and his students' work. Cai formally founded the Yunnan Institute of Tropical Botany in 1959. At a time when rainforests at the same latitude were disappearing due to ecological damage, he led his team deep into Xishuangbanna, reached Gourd Island by canoe, and built the institute in the primitive jungle.
Cai Xitao's contributions were huge—he investigated plant and medicinal resources, discovered that the mayten tree could fight cancer and pioneered its cultivation, and planted a dracaena tree here with his own hands. When he passed away in 1981, some of his ashes were buried under that very tree to honor his lifelong dedication to tropical plant research.
Trees Planted by Notable Figures
English
You'll also find trees planted by other notable figures. Even Prince Philip of the UK, former president of WWF, planted a towering tree here—a *Parashorea chinensis* that can grow up to 80 meters and is sometimes called the "giant of the tropical rainforest."
The Banyan Garden
English
There are roughly 100 banyan species in China—60 of them in Yunnan and nearly 50 right here in Xishuangbanna. Built in 1993, this one-hectare garden showcases over 100 species, including some wild ones with massive plank-like roots that spread out in all directions, making the trees look like they're ready for launch.
These roots evolved this way to anchor the trees on limestone mountains and rocky terrain in tropical rainforests—basically giving the massive trunks and huge canopies the support they need. The largest plank buttress in Xishuangbanna is 5 meters high and 12 meters long.
The "One-Tree Forest" Phenomenon
English
One of the coolest things here is the "one-tree forest" phenomenon. Banyans grow these aerial roots that hang from branches. When they touch the ground, they root themselves and eventually become trunk-like supports. Get enough of these, and you've got what looks like an entire forest sprouting from one tree.
Parasitic Plant Phenomena
English
You'll also see some wild parasitic action—plants basically strangling their hosts, or flowering directly on old, dying trunks while the host withers away. It's nature's dramatic version of a love triangle. Two trees might be so tightly intertwined they look inseparable, but actually the outer one is the "plant hangman"—living off the nutrients of its host. As the host gets weaker and the parasite gets stronger, the host eventually gets strangled to death from lack of water and sunlight.
You'll also see orchids growing on banyan trunks. These are aerial epiphytes too, using their air roots to pull water and nutrients straight from the air. They typically attach to banyans because it gets them good sun and rain exposure, creating what looks like a "natural garden floating in the air."
The Rare Flower Garden
English
This smaller garden (0.67 hectares) packs 243 rare plant species that you won't find many places in China. Highlights include:
- Giant *Aristolochia grandiflora* with enormous blooms
- "Dancing grass"—this stuff actually moves when it hears music over 45 decibels. The pressure in the leaf cells changes with the sound vibrations, making the leaves shimmy. The cells at the leaf tips have different pressure than other parts, so when sound waves vibrate the air around them, the pressure changes rhythmically and the leaf tips twitch slightly—basically dancing along to the music.
>Note: The world's largest single flower is the *Rafflesia arnoldii* (corpse flower). *Aristolochia grandiflora* is among the largest flowers among herbaceous plants.
Sensitive Plant
English
The sensitive plant (*Mimosa pudica*) is another special plant in the garden. When you touch it, the leaves droop and close up. This happens because the pulvini (swollen leaf bases) contain liquid-filled structures—basically like little "water bags" that store nutrients—and they're super sensitive to touch. When you brush the leaves, liquid flows from these bags into the leaves themselves, and gravity does the rest, making them droop and fold shut. After a bit, when the bags refill, the leaves stretch back out and return to normal.
Leafless Trees
English
There's also a unique category of leafless trees (milk bush / *Euphorbia tirucalli*) here—they have green branches instead. They originally come from hot, dry Africa, and over time their leaves basically shriveled up and disappeared because it helped them survive in harsh desert conditions. Instead, the green branches do all the photosynthesis. But here's the kicker: if you move them to a humid place, they actually start growing leaves again to help balance their water levels. The branches and trunks have toxic sap that protects them from viruses and insects, and the sap can be processed into biofuel.
The Water Plant Garden
English
This 1.2-hectare water garden features gorgeous lotuses and water lilies. In Chinese culture, the lotus is actually super symbolic—it stays pure even though it grows in mud, representing purity and elegance. The real showstopper though is the king lotus (*Victoria amazonica*) from the Amazon. It's massive and beautiful, and here's the wild part: the flowers actually change color throughout the day. They open white, close back up as a bud the next morning, then open again in the evening but this time they're rosy pink, before deepening to red and fading on the third day. And the leaves? They're so huge they can literally hold a 20-kilo kid.
The Tree Garden
English
Opened in 1959 and spanning 16 hectares, this is the botanical garden's research core. Its main job is collecting and protecting rare and endangered plants, bringing in important commercial plants, and improving ecosystems. It's divided into sections for gymnosperms, commercial plants, introduced species, tropical plants, and oil-producing plants. After more than 40 years of development, there are 565 species here, many of which are protected by different countries. Today the whole area is dense with trees and tons of diversity—basically a natural ecological park.
The Palm Garden
English
Palms are basically the signature tropical plant. There are around 2,000 palm species worldwide, mostly in the Americas and Southeast Asia. China has over 300 species (including introduced varieties), most in the southwest. They're incredibly useful—you can get sugar from coconut, toddy palm, date palm, and sugar palms. Oil palms give you cooking oil. Some tropical areas use palm wood to build houses and dye fabric. And a bunch of them have medicinal properties used for making tinctures and ointments. Basically, there are "treasures" all over palms.
The Palm Garden covers 4.7 hectares and has brought in over 150 palm species from Guangdong and Fujian in China, plus the United States, Brazil, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
Patta Palms and Caryota Palms
English
You'll spot patta palms (*Corypha umbraculifera*) here—tall plants with broad leaves and rock-hard trunks. The leaves are super thick and durable, so you can carve text into them and it'll last forever. That's why ancient Dai people used them to write Buddhist scriptures on—a tradition that created the famous "patta-leaf scriptures."
There's also the fishtail palm (*Caryota urens*, also called toddy palm). They have straight, tall trunks, and their tender stem core is loaded with starch that can be turned into sago and other delicious foods. The bark is hard enough to make durable sinks, chopsticks, and roof eaves. They can live up to 60 years, with some reaching 30 meters tall with half-meter trunks and 10-meter-wide canopies, making them great ornamental plants.
> Note: The "bottle palm" (*Hyophorbe lagenicaulis*) gets its name from its bottle-shaped swollen trunk, and is a different species from *Caryota urens*.
The Fruit Garden
中文

This four-hectare garden shows it all—medicinal plants, edible plants, religious plants, and ornamental plants. You'll learn about the "five trees and six flowers" sacred in Southern Buddhism, plus local beliefs about peacocks being symbols of good fortune.
The Shade Plant Garden
English
Shade plants need two things to thrive: warm, humid climate and protection from direct sunlight. With just 5% of sunlight reaching the rainforest floor, shade plants absolutely thrive here. This one-hectare garden has 500 species, including 200 tropical orchids and ferns. Some grow on the ground, others on tree trunks and branches—basically creating a "natural garden floating in the air." You'll spot some serious protected species here too, from Class A protected plants like tree ferns to Class B species like staghorn ferns.
The Kapur Garden
