An elderly man in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, who became an online sensation for growing seven gourds reminiscent of the classic cartoon Calabash Brothers, has cut them all down and removed them. Local authorities confirmed the move, citing safety concerns over surging visitor numbers and the couple's need for peace and quiet.

The 75-year-old man explained that his wife had been feeling unwell due to dizziness, while the surge in tourists attracted by the gourds' viral fame had caused overcrowding at the site, potentially putting visitors' personal safety at risk. The constant attention had become physically exhausting for the elderly couple, prompting them to remove the gourds ahead of schedule.

Community officials noted that while the couple appreciated the visitors' enthusiasm and enjoyed brief interactions with them, the prolonged attention had taken a toll. Removing the gourds was also intended to prevent overcrowding and ensure the safety of both the elderly residents and the visitors.
