Longnan-Zhouqu-Diebu, Gansu:

Morning dawns. There it lies – Bailongjiang has rolled on through yet another whole night right outside our hotel. Eight years ago I went out of my way to traverse Gansu, and the town of Longnan was likewise my very first pitstop in the province during my 48-day odyssey towards Xinjiang as a lone wanderer. Now Bailongjiang is again surging in front of my eyes in all its peaceful but unflinching vigor. The 576km River of White Dragon rises in Langmusi, Gansu and winds through rock-walled ravines and valleys before emptying into Jialingjiang, Guangyuan, Sichuan as the largest tributary of Jialingjiang which in turn feeds the Yangtze River as its largest tributary.

天色向晓，酒店外白龙江潺湲未息又一夜。8年前孤身赴疆48天期间特地取道入甘，陇南便是当年初抵陇地首站。今日重临，又见这一脉江流横陈目前，水波安和，蕴劲于柔。白龙江延绵576公里，源起甘肃郎木寺，萦回辗转于岩壑幽谷之间，奔流至四川广元纳于嘉陵江，为江陵江最大支流；嘉陵继而迤逦东下，作为长江最大支流归入长江。

This time I’m bent on exactly retracing my route of 8 years ago in Gansu, wandering down a memory lane, with mummy and Yunduo’er as my newfound fellow rovers. Longnan being already in the bag, we set off northwards on G345 which snakes upstream along Bailongjiang through deep valleys, with the sky glowing a vivid blue and streaked with masses of billowy clouds draping over distant mountain crests and sweeping across the firmament. Roughly 91km later we get to Zhouqu, a small town mauled by the 2010 apocalyptic landside which claimed 1700 lives. Scars of the cataclysm were nowhere to be seen 8 years ago, and nor are they today. Eight years ago I personally interviewed two locals who told me that the government built free new homes for the locals after the calamity. Yunduo’er goes up the steps to the monument in remembrance of the victims. Down the slope is a museum honoring those heroes who sacrificed their lives in the rescue and paying homage to the spade-wielding PLA soldiers who went all out to save lives. When leaving Zhouqu, we pass through a brand new zone, as I did 8 years ago, which obviously has risen from the ashes.

此番决意重踏8年前行迹旧途，循昔日行辙，抚过记忆留痕，只是如今多了云朵儿和妈妈。当年入甘首站陇南现已落定，接下来复沿G345国道北向。国道缘江溯行，盘绕于层峦谷地之间。天宇澄湛，云絮嵯峨，漫越群峰，铺覆遥穹。91公里后抵舟曲。2010年泥石流巨祸曾摧折舟曲，劫后遗痕8年前已销弭无踪，今天更是如此。8年前我曾跟两个当地人闲聊，他们说灾后政府免费为受灾家庭盖了新居。云朵儿登上台阶，眼前是悼慰遇难百姓的纪念碑。坡下是纪念馆，追念施救百姓的赴难义士、致敬挥锹赴险的解放军。离开舟曲时如8年前一样穿过一片焕然新生、浴火重兴的新城。

The next section of G345 leads us away from Zhouqu, which is part of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture where hallmarks of the traditions of the Tibetans as an ethnic minority group like colored prayer streamers are leaping out at us. Wall carvings depicting the Red Army reflect that the revolutionaries who have founded New China were once here during their epic Long March almost a century ago. In the late afternoon we find ourselves in Diebu, with Bailongjiang still lingering at our elbow, where Yunduo’er snaps shots of a rainbow - something that she’s been enthralled by ever since she was little - arching across the sky outside our road-front hostel.

再上G345国道离舟曲，其实低舟曲那可刻即入甘南藏族自治州。甘南藏域风物奔扑眼帘，五彩经幡俯仰可见。崖壁石刻载录史诗长征旧事，日后建立新中国的革命者曾履是壤。下午到达迭部，白龙江依旧萦回身侧。此时一弯彩虹拱跨长空，云朵儿于民宿旁举镜仰摄。这般虹景正是云朵儿多年心驰。
