内蒙古呼和浩特‑山西碛口古镇：
The beautiful leg of the day kicks off with a small bedside note Yunduo'er writes thoughtfully before leaving the hotel: “Nice here: Hello I'm Yunduo'er. Please don't throw this piece of paper away. Keep this nice memory. I am eight and half years old. I'm a pupil. My formal name is Chenshuyin. Sorry my handwriting is not very good.” That's Yunduo'er's artless, unstudied but heartwarming morning farewell to the city of Hohhot where she's had loads of fun for three days.
离开酒店前云朵儿认真写下床头纸条：“这里的美好：您好我是云朵儿请不要把这张纸扔掉留这美好的记 yi 我令年 8 岁半一名小学生大名 xxx 不好意思我写的字不太好看哦。”玲珑稚言，质朴无华，但暖意融融，这是云朵儿跟欢愉三日的呼和浩特的清晨道别。
The 503km southerly drive mostly on G59 Hubei Highway pulls us out of Inner Mongolia and straight into the province of Shanxi. Qikou, billed as the First Town Along the Nine‑Bend Yellow River. Tucked away in a valley on the banks of the Mother River of the Chinese Nation, Qikou once hit its stride as an important trading hub where grains, furs, herbal medicines and salt must be unloaded ‑ because boats couldn’t make it through this stretch of the tempestuous, mighty river ‑ and then got shifted to overland carts bound for eastern regions. It was at Qikou that many of the high‑flying Shanxi merchants got their big break. After basking in two centuries’ worth of prosperity, the hamlet was gradually past its sell‑by date amidst the jangle of modernity and today it’s nothing more than an off‑the‑beaten‑path destination.
503 公里长路，沿 G59 呼北高速南行，出内蒙古直入三晋山河。碛口，九曲黄河第一镇，藏于谷地之间，傍母亲河黄河而立。碛口曾因此处黄河河道险滩横阻，舟楫难再前行，故谷物皮货、草药盐斤等皆于此地卸落改换车马陆路输往京津冀诸地。于是碛口一度步入鼎盛，成为关键水陆转运要埠。许多风云得志、商途腾达之晋商于碛口起家兴家。两百年繁华浸润过后，在现代浪潮的喧嚣中，古村往日荣光终渐消散。时至今日，这里仅为小众目的地。
We settle down in a hostel of cave‑dwelling style. Here the river is not as furious as what we saw at Hukou Waterfall 8 years ago when 8‑month‑old Yunduo'er was making the first China Drive of her own with us; now its occasionally placid persona reveals itself right down there in front of our windows.
入住仿窑洞客栈。不像 8 年前 8 个月大云朵儿跟我们进行她自己的第一次走中国期间到访过的壶口瀑布那样狂躁，此段黄河敛尽锋芒，一派平和沉静全然铺展于窗下眼前。
While we are having dinner at Qikou Yan, a gale‑force wind whips the town out of the blue. With the eerie sounds one feels the roof is being blown off. Then comes a sudden power cut. With our phone torch lights shone on the dishes, we could continue chowing down. After the meal, the wind has let up. While strolling back to our hostel in thin drizzle along the river bank, intrigued, Yunduo'er gazes down at the lustrous dancing and leaping fish silhouette cast on the rippling river already shrouded in darkness.
吃碛口宴时屋外突然风吼隆隆，声音怪异，似欲掀翻屋宇。转瞬灯火俱灭，四下断电。打开手机电筒，青光落于案盘，方才得以举箸。饭后，狂飙已歇，怒势已息。沿岸小雨中回走，大河已沉于夜幕。波光漾水，岸灯投下，河面可见一翩跹游跃鱼影，引云朵儿静静凝望。
