PART ONE: Scenic Area Overview

Location & Historical Significance

First, let me introduce you to Tengchong.

Tengchong is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Yunnan Province, administered by Baoshan City, located at the western edge of Yunnan. We are about 750 kilometers from Kunming. It is one of the most important border cities in Southwest China, bordering Myanmar to the north and west with a 148.7-kilometer border line.

Historically, Tengchong was an important town on the ancient Southern Silk Road and a crucial commercial gateway to South and Southeast Asia. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, commerce thrived here, especially jade trading, earning Tengchong the reputation of "The Jade City."

Three Geological Wonders

But the real treasure of Tengchong is not commerce or ancient relics—it's three geological wonders that the Earth has bestowed upon us!

First Wonder: Volcanic Field

Tengchong has 97 volcanoes—one of the densest volcanic fields in inland China! Twenty-two of them have particularly well-preserved craters. Scientists have confirmed that the vast majority of these volcanoes are currently dormant and could become active again. Such a volcanic field is extremely rare in China.

Second Wonder: Geothermal Hot Springs

Tengchong is also one of China's three major geothermal areas. With over 80 natural hot springs and steam vents, temperatures reach above 97°C. These springs are rich in minerals and especially beneficial for our health.

Third Wonder: Earthquake Zone

Tengchong is an area with relatively frequent earthquake activity. Over the past 500 years, there have been multiple earthquakes of magnitude 5 and above. What does this tell us? That Tengchong sits in the collision zone between the Eurasian and Indian plates. This collision and compression is precisely what creates volcanoes and hot springs.

Climate

Let me tell you some good news. Tengchong has an especially pleasant climate—perfect for seniors to relax and rejuvenate.

The average annual temperature is 15°C. Spring and winter are warm, while summer and autumn are cool. Rain and sunshine alternate throughout the year. Locals often say: "One mountain encompasses four seasons; weather changes every five kilometers." This means that at different elevations, weather can be completely different. Such climate makes Tengchong perfect for visiting year-round.

PART TWO: Tengchong Geological Overview

Deep Crustal Secrets

Now let me explain in detail why Tengchong has so many volcanoes and hot springs. The secret lies deep beneath Tengchong's crust.

Plate Collision

Based on geological survey data, Tengchong is located near the collision zone between the Eurasian and Indian plates. Two continental plates collide and compress each other here, causing intense crustal movement.

You can imagine the immense forces created when two massive land masses push against each other underground. What does this cause? Extremely intense underground magma activity.

Magma Chambers & Geothermal Energy

Geologists estimate that at great depths beneath Tengchong—roughly 7 to 25 kilometers down—there are still magma chambers. These chambers are enormous, with diameters possibly ranging from 10 to 30 kilometers.

More importantly, due to the dense development of north-south trending fracture systems, these magma chambers continuously release their heat energy. This is the source that creates Tengchong's unique geothermal phenomena. As hot water continuously rises from below, we see various hot springs.

History of Volcanic Activity

Tengchong's volcanic activity dates back millions of years. The earliest eruptions occurred about 3.4 million years ago. The most recent eruptions happened approximately 7,000 years ago.

These timeframes might sound distant, but in the Earth's geological history, they're actually very recent. In geological terms, 7,000 years ago is like yesterday. What does this mean? That Tengchong's volcanoes are still "active" geologically. Although they're currently dormant, they could wake up anytime.

PART THREE: Dakongshan Mountain

Basic Information

Now we're heading to Dakongshan, the star attraction of our scenic area and the heart of the volcanic park.

Dakongshan stands at 2,080 meters above sea level. At the summit is a pot-shaped crater, approximately 300 meters in diameter and 60 meters deep. This crater resembles a giant pot, which is why locals call it the "pot-shaped crater."

To reach the summit, you'll slowly walk 598 stone steps—597 going up, 598 coming down. Why the difference? Because when coming down, the last step is level ground, so we count it as an extra step.

There's no need to rush. The steps are gentle overall, and you can stop to rest every dozen steps or so. Hold the handrails, and let's take our time. This way, you'll enjoy the scenery while getting proper rest.

Crater Mysteries

When you reach the summit, look into the crater. You'll see porous, honeycomb-like rocks called pumice stones—remnants from ancient eruptions, some over 3.4 million years old.

Pumice stone has a magical property—it floats on water! This defies common sense, yet it's true. Why? Because it's filled with tiny air pockets like a honeycomb, making it extremely light.

The great Ming Dynasty traveler Xu Xiake described pumice this way: "Though large enough to require both arms to hold, two fingers can lift it." Isn't that amazing?

Here's an interesting experience—if you stomp your foot on the summit, you'll hear an echo. That's because the crater is deep and hollow, creating acoustic reflections. This is why it's called "Dakongshan"—the hollow mountain!

Summit Views

From the summit, you can see nearly 20 volcanoes of various sizes—like a large volcanic family gathered together, each with its own story.

The most famous arrangement is called the "Big Dipper"—7 main volcanoes arranged like the stars of the Big Dipper constellation. This arrangement is extremely rare in the world.

Sister Lakes

Near the three mountains, there are two closely-connected volcanic lakes. Locals call them "Sister Lakes" because they're like sisters, huddled close together.

The water is crystal clear, revealing great depths. Its deep blue color makes the lakes look like sapphires set in green forests.

The shoreline is dotted with red camellia trees. Scientific research confirms this is the ancestor of all Yunnan camellias. The oil extracted from its fruits is both nutritious and medicinal—truly a "green oil reservoir."

Heiyu River

There's also Heiyu River, named for the abundance of black fish in its waters.

The water comes from groundwater gushing out of volcanic caves. Imagine how deep underground it was heated, what journey it took. It's a gift from deep within the Earth.

During rainy season, the river splits into two streams—one clear, one murky—flowing side by side for dozens of meters before merging. Why? Because they come from different sources: one from clear underground springs, one from murky rainwater. Each maintains its own character, flowing together yet unmixed.

PART FOUR: Hot Sea Overview

Location

Now we enter another magical realm—the Hot Sea.

The Hot Sea Scenic Area is located about 12 kilometers southwest of Tengchong's urban area, where geothermal phenomena are most concentrated—truly a "Geothermal Museum"—covering about 9 square kilometers.

Formation

You might wonder—why are there so many hot springs here?

Because Tengchong sits where the Eurasian and Indian plates collide. This compression causes intense crustal movement and strong underground magma activity.

The magma deep underground continuously releases its heat energy. Groundwater passing through scorching rock layers gets heated and erupts at the surface.

These eruptions take various forms—hot water, steam, even toxic gases—creating a unique geothermal kingdom.

Medical & Wellness Value

Let me tell you some good news. The hot springs of Hot Sea are not just beautiful landscapes; more importantly, they have genuine wellness value.

As early as 1961, the 71st Army Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army established a geothermal wellness clinic here. After long-term observation, doctors found significant auxiliary therapeutic and wellness benefits.

These hot springs are especially beneficial for:

(Rheumatoid arthritis)

(Bone spurs)

(Post-stroke sequelae)

(Skin conditions)

(Various chronic conditions)

Why? Because hot springs are rich in minerals like sulfur and calcium. These minerals, combined with warm water temperature, not only stimulate the skin and promote blood circulation, but also assist the body's metabolism and healing processes.

So bathing in hot springs isn't just pleasure—it's an auxiliary wellness method. That's why more and more seniors come to Hot Sea for health and wellness.

PART FIVE: Zaotang River Waterfall

Zaotang River's Characteristics

Please look at the river ahead—this is Zaotang River. What makes it unique? The water is already warm!

The name comes from "bathing pond river." Why? Because the riverbed is full of hot springs that warm the entire flow, making it perfect for bathing year-round.

The Waterfall

The most spectacular feature is a 10-meter-high, 5-meter-wide waterfall. Though not extremely tall, it's extraordinary.

What makes it unique? It crosses a geological fault line.

Above the waterfall is cold river water plunging downward. Below, numerous high-temperature hot springs reach 95°C+. The contrast between cold and hot water creates rising steam and often beautiful rainbows. This contrast is meaningful—it symbolizes life's balance between opposites coexisting harmoniously. Nature's wisdom at work.

Ming Dynasty traveler Xu Xiake recorded: "In the gorge, steaming vapors billow forth from several places, rising like thick smoke and rolling mist." Written over 400 years ago, his description remains remarkably accurate—as if he'd seen it yesterday.

How the Waterfall Forms

The waterfall actually has three stages, with a total drop of about 10 meters:

These three stages create a cascade effect, with water roaring down powerfully.

The average water flow is 0.8 cubic meters per second, but during rainy season it reaches 3.5 cubic meters per second—making the waterfall truly spectacular.

PART SIX: Hot Sea Core River Valley

Location

Now we reach the heart of Hot Sea—the scenic core area distributed along Zaotang River Valley. Locals affectionately call it "Xiangzhipo," and it contains Hot Sea's most magical variety of geothermal springs.

Pond of Beauties

At the base is the Pond of Beauties, a natural hot spring bath. It collects all the high-temperature water from springs higher up. As water flows down the slope, it gradually cools to about 40°C—perfect for bathing.

There's a beautiful legend about this pool's name. Long ago, a fairy supposedly bathed here often. Over time, the spring water was infused with an ethereal quality.

While romantic, science offers a better explanation. The water is rich in minerals truly beneficial to skin—nature's gift rather than magic.

Pearl Spring

Walking upward, you'll reach Pearl Spring. Why the name? Bubbles continuously rise from the bottom, rolling on the surface like shimmering pearls.

The water temperature is about 88-95°C. Though hot, the atmosphere feels gentle and warm.

Spectacles Spring / Sister Spring

Further up, you'll see Spectacles Spring—two side-by-side springs that look like eyeglasses.

Locals call it "Sister Spring" because the two springs look like sisters holding hands, inseparable. Each Hot Sea attraction has both geological and cultural significance.

Drum-beat Spring

As you continue upward, you'll hear an unusual sound—"boom boom boom"—like ancient war drums thundering. This is Drum-beat Spring.

This sound comes from high-temperature, high-pressure underground gases shooting through rock crevices. Each eruption creates a thunderous boom. Nature performs a symphony from the Earth's interior.

Pregnancy-inducing Well

Pregnancy-inducing Well is the last and most mysterious site on this valley.

Legend says married women who drink the water become pregnant. While this sounds like ancient folklore...

Scientific testing confirms the water contains radon, sulfur, and other minerals. From a modern wellness perspective, therapeutic hot spring bathing provides certain benefits. However, please note—direct drinking of spring water is not recommended, as excess radon exposure carries health risks. So enjoy the legend, but only bathe in designated hot spring pools!

Interestingly, there are actually two wells—the Dragon Well on the left and the Phoenix Well on the right. Dragon and phoenix symbolize good fortune, life, and continuation—reflecting ancient Chinese reverence and blessing for life itself.

PART SEVEN: The Big Boiling Pot

The Spectacle

Now we reach the most spectacular and awe-inspiring sight in Hot Sea—the Big Boiling Pot.

Basic Dimensions

The Big Boiling Pot is a round boiling pool, 6.12 meters in diameter and 1.5 meters deep. But numbers alone can't convey its majesty—you must stand before it to feel the Earth's power.

The water is extremely hot—reaching 96.6°C at the surface. The geothermal spring water temperature at its source exceeds 100°C. At such temperatures, food cooks quickly, and it reminds us to always keep a safe distance and never approach or touch the water.

Unique Features

Driven by underground pressure, hot water erupts intermittently with thunderous sound. Steam shoots skyward, filling the entire area.

Why "Big Boiling Pot"? Because it looks like an enormous pot with water constantly churning and rolling—a very descriptive name.

Historical Records

On a nearby rock are two characters—"Hot Sea"—inscribed by Li Genyuan, a renowned geologist and patriot from the Republican era. Though seemingly simple, these characters carry historical weight and cultural significance—a historical testament.

Legend

There's an ancient legend about the Big Boiling Pot. Long ago, a bull was grazing on the slope above it. Accidentally, it lost its footing and fell into the boiling water.

In what seemed like an instant, the bull's flesh and bones separated. When the owner arrived, only bones remained. While frightening, this story truly reflects the pot's power—why we must maintain safe distance.

Geothermal Eggs

The Big Boiling Pot has a gentler side too. Near the springs, stone troughs are used for geothermal cooking. The geothermal eggs are especially famous—bundled with straw and placed in troughs, they're perfectly cooked in less than half an hour.

This is one of "Yunnan's 18 Oddities"—"Eggs sold in clusters." Why? Because vendors bundle them together on bamboo strips and sell them by the bunch.

You can try one here and experience nature's cooking skill. The flavor is special—the yolk especially fragrant. You'll love it.

PART EIGHT: History & Culture

Xu Xiake & Tengchong

I've mentioned Xu Xiake several times. Let me tell you more about this great traveler.

Xu Xiake was a Ming Dynasty geographer and traveler who spent nearly 30 years exploring China. He measured China's landscapes with his feet and recorded them with his pen. His travel journals are among the world's greatest geographical works.

In 1639, at age 52, Xu Xiake came to Tengchong specifically to conduct detailed investigations and recordings. Over 400 years later, his descriptions of pumice, hot springs, and volcanoes remain accurate. His understanding of pumice even aligns with modern geology.

Ancient Legends

There's an ancient and beautiful legend about how Hot Sea and volcanoes were formed.

In ancient times, the area was bitterly cold and people suffered. A kind old man resolved to bring warmth to them. His sincerity moved the heavens.

The immortals gave him a magical pearl to hold. But it made him unbearably hot, so he drank entire rivers to cool down. Finally, he transformed into a dragon spouting hot water.

Wherever he rested his feet, countless hot springs emerged. From then on, the land was perpetually warm, livestock thrived, and crops flourished.

While fictional, this legend beautifully expresses ancient reverence and gratitude for this magical land.
